Making phone calls on a German train - wait a minute!
by Friedhelm Weidelich
Some facts
DB's route network covers a total of 33,400 kilometers. Of these, 7,800 kilometers are main lines on which all ICE and the most important IC trains are in service. Deutsche Telekom plans to provide these routes with a data rate of more than 200 Mbit/s by the end of 2024.
Deutsche Telekom also plans to offer a data rate of more than 200 Mbit/s by the end of 2025 on a further 13,800 kilometers of high-passenger lines on which more than 2,000 passengers travel each day. In both cases, this is significantly more than today.
Deutsche Telekom plans to provide all other lines with a data rate of more than 100 Mbit/s by the end of 2026. In the coming years, coverage will then be continuously adapted to the respective state of the art. In the coming years, Deutsche Telekom will put around 800 new mobile sites into operation and expand capacity at several hundred sites to improve the mobile network along the rail lines.
