With Gauge 1, there’s a lot of hype, but it often takes years before production begins. Sometimes, even after ten years, there’s still no model in sight. But things move faster when you have a plan.

At the French heritage railway, I found the counterpart to the hand-operated 5-ton crane from Bavaria, which Fine Models produced for gauge 1. It is over 110 years old.

If the substance of an old Gauge 1 model is good, it can still be refined and brought up to date even decades later. Bernhard Lindlbauer has reworked a 28-year-old Dingler model of the Bavarian 5-ton crane of the Deutsche Reichsbahn and equipped it with functional details.

Since the technical fundamentals of railways have remained unchanged for many decades, old regional railway chassis could be used to build work cars. Steiner Modellwerke took a similar approach with its gauge 1 models of DB X cars.
